FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Our dental staff team always strives to educate patients to improve their oral health and to answer any questions and concerns they may have. You can find the answers to some of the most commonly asked questions we get at Dr. Danny Wong Dental Office.

If you have a question or a concern that is not answered in the following, feel free to contact us today for more information.

Tea, coffee, wine, sports drinks, berries, and balsamic vinegar are only a few examples that can cause staining on teeth.

Bacteria can sometimes get into the tooth via a deep cavity, crack or trauma, making the tooth infected or damaged.

Symptoms where a root canal treatment may be needed may include

  • Sharp and/or severe tooth pain
  • High level of sensitivity with hot or cold food or beverage
  • Tooth pain that keeps you up at night
  • Lingering pain
  • Severe pain on biting or chewing
  • Common pain relief medications do not relieve the tooth pain

Root canal treatment involves

  1. Removing the infected tissue
  2. Cleaning, disinfecting, and filling the root canal
  3. Restoring your tooth with a crown or filling (depending on the circumstances and your needs)

Root canal treatments may take one or more appointments, depending on the individual situations. However we strive to make procedure as comfortable and pleasant as possible. Feel free to contact us for more information about root canal treatments or if you think you may need this procedure.

Using a soft bristled brush, place it at a 45-degree angle to your gum line and use short back and forth strokes or circular motion to brush 2-3 teeth at a time.  Be gentle! Brush all surfaces, including outer, inner and chewing surfaces and brush for at least 3 minutes.

We recommend brushing at least twice a day (usually once in the morning and once before going to bed) and flossing at least once a day.

Several options are available to replace missing teeth, including bridges, implants and removable dentures.

  • A bridge works by securing a natural looking artificial tooth to natural tooth on either side.
  • Dental implants involve metal posts that are surgically placed into the jawbone under your gums and once they are in place, fixed artificial teeth can be mounted onto them.
  • Removable Dentures are a removable prosthetic device containing artificial teeth to replace missing teeth.

Each option is very distinct and work better in certain situations, hence it is best to talk to a dental professional to see what we recommend for you to fit your needs.

Most dental grinding and clenching is related to anxiety or emotional stress.

Possible ways to improve dental grinding and clenching:

  • Stress Management
  • Ask your partner or other family members about the history of grinding or clenching
  • Use a professional, custom-made night guard
  • Speak to a dental professional for advice

Bruxism includes dental grinding and clenching, both of which wear away tooth structure. If severe enough, it can actually cause damage to the outer layer of the tooth surface, known as enamel. Sometimes dental grinding and clenching happens without you knowing about it, so it is best to consult the dentist for their professional opinion.

To resolve tooth sensitivity, it is important first to identify the causes of tooth sensitivity present in your everyday life. To determine these causes, it is best to contact our dental team so we can effectively diagnose these causes and target these issues.
For example,

  1. if tooth sensitivity is due to tooth erosion from acidic foods, it is important to remineralize tooth surfaces (through use of fluoridated toothpaste and/or sugar free chewing gum) to strengthen and protect the teeth.
  2. We suggest using a straw while consuming acidic beverages to limit its contact to teeth and rinsing with water after consumption.
  3. Toothpaste for sensitive teeth is sometimes also recommended.
  4. However, sometimes changes in lifestyle habits are insufficient to resolve tooth sensitivity, so professional dental intervention is needed. These are just some of many ways to resolve tooth sensitivity from this cause. If you believe that you are experiencing tooth sensitivity, feel free to contact Dr. Danny Wong Dental Office for more information. Each patient presents a unique case and sometimes tooth sensitivity arises from multiple causes. Therefore, it is important to first thoroughly discuss the possible causes with the dentist. This gains a further understanding of the situation and helps the dentist create a personalized treatment to determine what works best for you to relieve tooth sensitivity.

Tooth sensitivity can be caused by a variety of reasons, including

  • Tooth decay
  • Exposed tooth surfaces due to aggressive tooth brushing
  • Worn tooth surface
  • Cracked tooth
  • Worn fillings
  • Gum recession
  • Gum disease
  • Teeth grinding and/or clenching
  • Tooth erosion from acidic foods
  • Tooth erosion from gastroesophaegeal reflux diseases or bulimia

Tooth sensitivity may occur when the protective outer layer of the tooth (known as enamel) is worn down, exposing the inner layer of the tooth (known as dentine) to the oral environment. When dentine is exposed, it comes into contact with external stimuli, causing tooth sensitivity.

  • Severe tooth decay or infection
  • Severe gum disease
  • Severe tooth fracture/ cracked tooth
  • Tooth trauma
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Baby tooth is preventing its subsequent adult teeth from coming out
  • Orthodontic reasons

Gum disease can be prevented through proper maintenance of oral hygiene, including brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and regular dental check ups and cleanings.

Early stages of gum disease involve the inflammation of the gums commonly due to plaque and tartar . Symptoms of gum disease can range from gums bleeding when brushing to tooth loss if severe. The milder form of gum disease is known as gingivitis and can usually be reversed with proper oral hygiene and regular professional cleaning. However, if untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis (a more severe form of gum disease).
Periodontitis is very destructive as it can lead to bone loss around the tooth, resulting in loose tooth and potential tooth loss. Periodontitis can cause permanent damage and requires more extensive treatment.

  • Brush at least twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste
  • Floss at least once a day
  • Use sugar-free chewing gum
  • Limit the frequency of snacking or meal intakes
  • Choose a healthy and balanced diet and drink lots of water
  • Avoid sweet or sticky food
  • Visit the dentist regularly for dental examinations and professional
    cleanings

Plaque is a sticky bacteria-containing film that builds up on your teeth and is also the primary factor in causing tooth decay and gum disease. Without consistent
removal through brushing, flossing, and regular dental visits , plaque will accumulate on tooth surfaces, causing various kinds of dental diseases.

Using approximately 18” of floss, wind it around the middle finger of both hands. Gently move the floss up and down to the gum line between your teeth
and be sure to slide it up and down against the surface of the tooth. Repeat for all teeth.

Some tips include:

  • Brushing at least twice a day
  • Flossing at least once a day
  • Reducing the daily sugar intake quantity and frequency to minimize tooth
    decay
  • Attending regular dental check ups and dental cleanings (at least once every
    6 months)

We recommend visiting the dentist at least once every 6 months. Even if you have not experienced any symptoms of disease, it doesn’t necessarily mean that
there are no problems. The best way to know for sure is to attend a dental examination, so dental professionals can catch any early signs of tooth decay,
gum disease, and other abnormalities. Discovering problems early is essential to avoid larger scale problems later on. Furthermore, dental cleanings by dental
professionals will help remove plaque and tartar in hard to reach areas or areas you may have missed.
